After enjoying a childhood of travel with his parents throughout the western United States, Sonny answered the call of duty during the Vietnam War by joining the United States Marine Corps. Following basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sonny was assigned to combat duty with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. Upon completion of two tours of duty and an honorable discharge in 1971, the United States Marine Corps bestowed upon Sonny the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star, the Rifle Marksman Badge and the Good Conduct Medal
