Jacob was born to German immigrants from Prussia, Jacob and Elizabeth Naegelein Alsdorf. His father came to America in 1855, sailing out of Antwerp, Belgium on the "Sheridan." He supported his family working as a shoemaker.

On the 1870 for Summerfield, Illinois census Jacob was 1 year old. By the 1880 census, Jacob's father had died, leaving his mother a widow, surviving with help from her 24 year old son, Louis Alsdorf (#147958394 on Find-a-Grave).

Jacob was married to Alma Elizabeth Weibert near the turn of the century. On the 1910 census for Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois the family's name was incorrectly transcribed as "Olsdorf." Jacob was a 42 year old proprietor of a grocery store. Alma was a 34 year old mother of 2 children, Carl and Ruth.

By the 1920 census, the family had moved to St. Louis. Jacob was 52 years old and working as a bolt cutter at an iron foundry. Alma was a homemaker. Their son, Carl, was working as a candy maker and Ruth was a student.

On the 1930 St. Louis census, 61 year old Jacob was working as an iron worker for a railroad supply company. Alma was a 54 year old mother and grandmother. Their adult daughter, Ruth, and her daughter were living with them. Carl's two children, Carl O. and Erwin, were also in the home at the time of the census.

Jacob died on May 25, 1940 from kidney failure. Alma died in 1961 at the age of 85.
