Sister Mary David McIntosh, O.P. (Anna McIntosh)

Born: September 8, 1913 Litchfield, Connecticut
Entered: August 15, 1931 Goshen
First Profession: April 17, 1933 Goshen
Final Profession: April 17, 1936 Blauvelt
Death: June 18, 1981 Nyack Hospital

June 18, 1981, just four months before the Community celebration of her golden jubilee, Sister Mary David McIntosh died suddenly in Nyack Hospital. Sister had spent the evening preparing to leave on a vacation with another Sister. One of her concerns was the tabulation of Mass stipends for her group. As coordinator she performed many of the functions we now associate with the traditional Superioress.

During her varied assignments she exhibited an unusual combination of true simplicity and faith coupled with a superior intellect. These assignments ranged from teaching in the parish elementary schools of Holy Spirit, St. Anselm’s, St. Pius, Bronx, NY, St. Raymond’s, Providence, RI; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy and St. Pius High School, Bronx, NY. Sister assumed the awesome duty of Novice Mistress in 1958 and continued in this capacity for ten years. Meanwhile, from 1955 to 1968 Sister taught Philosophy courses in Dominican College.

In 1969 Sister accepted the Principalship of St. Mary’s School in the Bronx. She continued in this appointment until 1978 when failing health caused her to resign and return to Blauvelt to recuperate. After regaining her strength Sister offered her services in St. Dominic’s Institution as Payroll Clerk. Her love for children as well as for teaching prompted Sister to engage in tutoring at St. Dominic’s School and to teach in the CCD program at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish, Tappan. Sister’s last assignment was in Dominican College Reading Skills Program where she gave valuable service.

Her love of the Community and Dominican life prompted her to take an active part in the activities of the Dominican Reflection Center of Ossining. She served on the committee for revision of the Constitutions and the Centennial publication of the community Here We Shall Be.

Sister had a memory for details and as novice mistress she would entertain the Novices with stories of her own experiences as well as recount the stories told to her as a young sister. Thus there was a bridging of the generation gap and her knowledge and love of all things Dominican was infused into them.

Numerous clergy, relatives, friends and members of the Community were in attendance at the funeral Mass on June 20. One of the letters sent to Sister Timothy seems to sum up Sister’s life: “Her life is an excellent testimony to the richness of the Blauvelt Dominican Community. Sister Mary David has returned home to her Father where she will be a marvelous advocate for her sisters and brothers in Dominic.”
