Ronald Craig Durrant, age 81, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2015 at his home in Cedar City, Utah, surrounded by his loved ones, after a short battle with cancer. Ron was born in Castle Gate, Utah on July 10, 1934 to R.L. and Brittania Craig Durrant. Then the family moved to Cedar City, Utah when Ron was one year old.
He married rose Marie Williams on July 10, 1954 in the St. George Temple. She passed away on July 24, 1955. Then he met and fell in love with Lorea Stewart. They were married on September 11, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
When Ron was a young man, he left his senior year of high school to join the US Navy. He was based out of Hawaii and served for 3 ½ years. After completing his service with the Navy, Ron returned to Utah to finish his high school education. He then attended college in Cedar City and enjoyed playing football there. After college, Ron started a business over 50 years ago. It was called Ron's Auto Accessories. After a year or two, the name was changed to Ron's Sporting Goods where hunting supplies and fishing equipment were added. The store was very small, so to make space for baseball, basketball, football equipment, shoes, boots, Levis, Wrangles and outerwear, the first of three additions were built. Later on, Ron added the Honda Showroom. The store of Ron's Sporting Goods had many faces. One of the two of the most remembered was the Deer Hunting Season where people came from many different states to buy licenses and hunting supplies. There were usually seven or eight employees, but for the hunting season, there were 17 or more employees because the store was opened 24 hours before the hunt started. There was always smiles to be found along with many bake sales and sourdough bread. As soon as the hunting season was over, the store was turned into the famous Toyland. You could find dolls, Tonka trucks, cars, games, stuffed animals, wagons, and much more. Then the store was turned back to the Sporting Goods after the first of the year. Ron's Sporting Goods was a legacy of love and family for many around. Ron will be greatly missed.
Ron is survived by his wife, Lorea Durrant, four daughters: Lesa (Bill) Kesnek, Vickie (Kenneth) Urie, Alene (Thomas) Lauren and Ronda (Daren) Draper; 22 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and sister, Deanna Norton. He is preceded in death by his parents, RL and Brittania Craig Durrant, brother, Roy Durrant and grandson, Cody James Davis.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Lyn, Dr. Corry and David Cowley, the nurses and staff at the Cancer Center. Also, to Bonnie Perkins and Ethan Bunker and most of all to Vickie Urie for keeping the store going for Dad.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the LDS Cedar Stake Center (155 East 400 South, Cedar City, Utah). A viewing will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 5-7 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 North 300 West, Cedar City, Utah) and on Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at the LDS Cedar Stake Center.
