Ira was the son of John Maley II & Jerusha Paddock. He was a smart lad in his youth being able to recite the whole greek grammer from memory. He was born just after at the end the the Revoluntionary War and the Manley family had been forced to flee their home in Dorset Vermont, temporarily from advancing british forces. In 1804 Ira graduated from the Middlebury College in Middlebury Vermont. He studied law with Richard Skinner in Manchester Vermont and he also taught school in Rutland Vermont and became the Principle of the Brandon Vermont H. Smith Academy. It is in 1822 that Ira had a calling to become a preacher. He wrote a magazine called the " The Home Missionary".

On July 22, 1805, he married Dorcas Hale. To this union 3 children were born:

Eliza
Charles
John

After Dorcas passed away in 1817, he married a 2nd time to Annis Wallace. To this union, 6 children were born:

Jonathan Wallace
Thomas Nesmith
Ira Roy Jr.
Florilla
Francis
Annis Wallace

Ira died at age 90 years old and is buried near his daugther, Eliza. He lived a full life, as many of his ancestors did.
