A US citizen, he died aged 72 years in Hospital Centenario, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. He was a Presbyterian minister and a physician.

He was the son of Horace Allyn, of Massachusetts.

He was survived by his widow, Emma Rebecca Carter Allyn (b. 1869 in Illinois; m. 1890, d. 1946) and his son, Lyman [also written as Syman] Robert Allyn (b. 1905 in Brazil), both of Recife. He was also the father of Irene Allyn Baker (b. 11 Feb 1894 in GA), of Virginia.

His first wife was Alice E. Carr with whom he had a son, Herbert Spencer Allyn (b. 9 June 1878 in Michigan).
