She was preceded in death by her husband, John Herman Wright; and her brothers, Wiley Martin Whitaker and Dr. Donald Nash Whitaker.
Mrs. Wright was born to Clara Spencer and Lonnie Lafayette Whitaker in Asheboro April 6, 1912.
She attended Queens College, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, and graduated with honors from Women’s College in Greensboro. Mrs. Wright spent most of her life in Asheboro, where she was a founder of the Asheboro-Randolph County library system. She was instrumental in the creation of the bookmobile program and the establishment of a branch library to serve black residents. She remained on the library’s board of directors for more than 30 years. She was active in garden and book clubs and in the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Wright is survived by her sister, Marjorie Whitaker Barrow of Augusta, Ga.; her son, Dr. John H. Wright of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Sarah Holland and husband James Rockwell Holland of Lewisville; grandchildren Whitney Wright Lewallen and husband Robert Gorman Lewallen, Leslie Miriam Wright, John Douglas Wright, all of Atlanta, Dorothy Brandon Holland of Winston-Salem, Forrest Hobbs Holland of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a great-grandchild, James Patterson Lewallen.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 20 in Asheboro with the Rev. Jeff White of the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem presiding. Memorials may be made to Asheboro-Randolph County library system.
