Wallace had appeared all right at the races and when he entered his son-in-laws automobile in the parking lot had seemed to be all right until he slumped forward after seating himself in the car.
He was taken immediately to St. Mary's Hospital, East St. Louis where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Death apparently was due to a heart attack.
Wallace had been in good health, so far as he knew. In 1946 he had been a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, suffering from pneumonia, and at that time a slight cardiac condition was discovered but he apparently recovered and had had no further trouble as a result of the heart condition. In March of 1950 he had undergone surgical treatment, but had recovered from that illness also.
He was born September 20, 1898 at Alsey, Ill., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace. He came to East Alton as a young man and on September 19, 1923 was married to Margaret Spellman of Alton. Their marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father M.A. Tarrent.
Wallace was a member of the Moose Lodge and Sportsman Club and his wife is a past regent of the Women of the Moose.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Mrs. S. Bernard Adams of Wood River; two sons, John E. Wallace, Alton and Airman First Class Ralph E. Wallace of Newburgh, N.Y., and a step-son Harry McBride of Alton. He also leaves a sister, Miss Ruth Wallace of San Francisco, Calif. who is flying to Alton for the funeral and two grandchildren.
Funeral rites will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. in Old Cathedral. Following the solemn requiem high mass the body will be interred in St. Patrick's cemetery. The body is at Staten Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today. The rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
A son, John, is employed in Alton Post Office, and employees of the Post Office will assemble at the funeral home Sunday at 7 p.m. to pay their respects to the memory of Wallace.
