J.E. Cumming and family are moving back to Blue Ridge this week where Mr. Cummings expects to engage in the grocery business.
-------------------------------------------
James Ellison Cummins/Cummings (spelling of the last name was changed about the time of the Civil War) was born on Aug 15, 1932, the first child born after the family moved from Monroe County, Virginia (West Virginia after 1863) to Middletown, Henry County, Indiana.
James married a local girl, Mary Malinda Fink, in Delaware County, Indiana on Aug 26, 1852, and September 1855 James and Mary bought an 80 acre farm for $600 near Tyner City, Marshall County, Indiana. This is where Mary Ellen was born two years later.
James served in the Civil War in Company "F" 73rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers from Aug 16, 1862 to July 1, 1865. With new skills working with horses and mules acquired in the military, James worked as a blacksmith for some years after the war. Then, lured by prospect of "free" Homestead Land, the family moved from Indiana to Olsburg, Pottawatomie County, Kansas in 1873 when Mary Ellen was sixteen years old and the family remained there for about thirteen years. In 1886, the family abandoned their Kansas homestead... all except Mary Ellen who had married George Area in January 1880 and moved 120 miles back east to a farm on the outskirts of Blue Ridge, Harrison County, Missouri.
James farmed for a short time, then opened a grocery store in Blue Ridge on October 2, 1890: "The new grocery will not be undersold. J.E. Cummings, dealer in staple groceries, flour, canned goods, fresh-salt meats, meal, feed, etc. etc. I invite all to give me a trial. I am thankful for past favors and hope by honest dealing to merit a share of your trade. Remember, produce taken in exchange for goods. South side of Park, Blue Ridge Missouri." James and Mary operated the store for fifteen years. He passed away on April 12, 1908 in Blue Ridge, Harrison County, Missouri. Mary survived her husband three years and died on July 1, 1911. Both are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Blue Ridge, Missouri. James and Mary had five children: Sarah "Sadie" Christena, Milton Walter, Mary Ellen, Eliza Jane "Lydia" and John Hyram.
