Black, Rebecca
On Wednesday evening of last week, Mrs. Rebecca Black was found in the field at her home a few miles down the river from this place, with life almost extinct, the clothing torn from her body, and great bruises upon her person, the seeming result of being trampled upon by the cattle which were running in the field where she was lying.
She was a widow and lived alone, and from appearances had been lying there helpless for 36 hours or more. She had taken her buckets to milk the cows, but was overtaken suddenly by something in the nature of apoplexy or by foul play. She died without regaining consciousness shortly after being found.
Mrs. Black was a daughter of the late Abram and Barbara Post, and was well known to the old residents in the neighborhood of South Bend(?).
Investigation will probably be made, and as we have no information, except common report, we do not deem it best to express an opinion as to the reasons why her death may be the result of crime.
