Priscilla Caroline "Carrie" (Speer/Speers) Looman Cochran Piburn Moss Miner DeGraw (also known as "Clara") was born on 9 April 1863 in Harrison County, Missouri.
Carrie was the youngest child of David Isaac Speer (1834-1863). He mustered-in to the Union Army during the Civil War on August 13, 1862 in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. He became a Private in the 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company G, and died of typhoid fever six months later at the Regimental Army Hospital at Columbus, Hickman County, Kentucky, on February 18, 1863 -- about six weeks before Carrie was born.
