Sister Adele Elizabeth Baehr CSJ, formerly known as Sister Mary Carolus, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, died Tuesday, (March 29, 2005) in the Sisters of St. Joseph Health Care Center, West Hartford in the 59th year of her religious life. She was born in New Haven on September 16, 1927 a daughter of the late Carl G. and Elsie M. (Becker) Baehr and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1946 and professed her perpetual vows on August 24, 1952. Sister Adele grew up in West Haven and was a graduate of St. Lawrence School. After entering religious life she attended the Diocesan Sisters College from which she received her degree in education. Sister was an educator all her religious life and her long service to the people of God and to her Community found her in various classrooms in the Archdiocese of Hartford, as well as the dioceses of Bridgeport and Norwich. In 1970 Sister Adele returned to her Alma Mater, St. Lawrence in West Haven, where she spent the next 12 years in the classroom. During this time she gained the respect and admiration of both parents and students alike, who could often be heard praising Sister Adele for her inherent ability to teach her students the lessons they needed to learn. At the end of her full time ministry in the classroom, Sister Adele continued to be involved in education and became the Coordinator of Religious Education at St. James Parish in Danielson where she remained for 16 years. Sister Adele retired to the Provincial House in 2001. In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Adele is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Edward Kapusta of East Haven; and several nieces and nephews. Sister was predeceased by two brothers, Carl and Arthur Baehr. Her funeral services will be held Thursday at 6:45 p.m. from the Convent Mary Immaculate, 27 Park Rd., West Hartford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph's Chapel. Interment will be in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery, West Hartford. Friends may call at the Convent on Thursday from 3-6:45 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Srs. of St. Joseph, 27 Park Rd., West Hartford, CT 06119. The Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, CT has care of arrangements.
