Born to Tyson George Maness & Agnes Marsh Maness (1813-1889), who married in 1842, in Anson County, NC. She was his second wife. I do not know the name of his first wife.

The family left North Carolina for Henderson County, TN, about 1857. From there, John & several of his siblings moved to Texas.

John was the youngest of 13 children:
• Elizabeth A. Maness (1831-?)
• Moab A. Maness (1834-1887 in TN; grave unknown)
• Emeline Maness Floyd (1838-1872)
• Jemima Maness (1839-?)
• Lucretia Maness (1841-?)
• James M. Maness (1842-1904)
• William M. Maness (1845-1906)
• Roseann Maness Patterson (1846-1921)
• Louisa Maness (1848-?)
• Mary Maness (1850-?)
• Queen Victoria Maness Taylor (1852-1924)
• George Washington Maness (1852-1901)
• John Tyson Maness (1855-1891)

John married Dicey A. Jones (7/13/1851-1891) of Tennessee about 1871 in Henderson County, TN. She was the daughter of Christopher Perry Jones (1825-1915) of South Carolina and Milberry Beatrice Patterson Jones (1828-1920) of Tennessee, who married in 1850.

Sometime after 1880, John & Dicey moved to Erath County, Texas. They are buried in Clairette Cemetery in unmarked graves, per descendant James Edward Daniel.

The ten children of John & Dicey:
• Milberry Agnes Maness Holt (1872-after 1880)
• Mary Emeline Maness Head (1874-1921)
• Perry Maness (1875-after 1880)
• Delany A. Maness (7/11/1878-after 1880; twin to Nancy)
• Nancy Jane Maness Cozby (1878-1954; twin to Delany)
• James Maness (1880-?)
• Queen Victoria Maness Jones (1885-1920)
• John William Maness (1887-1916)
• Leona Udell Maness Daniel (1889-1952)
• Agnes Maness (1891-?)

John Tyson Maness committed suicide shortly after Dicey died in childbirth with their final child.
