Raymond S. Hammerly, 82, of Newton died Aug. 17, 2007, at his home in Park Centre in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with the Rev. Michael Dack of the Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. A private family burial will be at the Wittemberg Cemetery in rural Newton. The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service with a coffee time at the church.

Memorials to the Congregational United Church of Christ, the Wittemberg Cemetery Association or to the Jasper County Historical Museum may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or at the church on the afternoon of the service.

The son of Lawrence W. and Lucille (Scott) Hammerly, he was born June 10, 1925, in rural Newton and was a lifelong resident of Newton. He was united in marriage to Margaret Brunner on Aug. 10, 1948, in Akron.

He was a graduate of Newton High School in 1943 and a graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor degree in dairy industry. He was retired from dairy farming and from the Maytag Dairy Farm where he had worked.

He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, a past resolution committee member with Mid America Dairyman’s Association, the Jasper County Dairy Promoters, a longtime member of the Wittemberg Grange and the Wittemberg Cemetery Association.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed big band music and loved being with his family. Farming was not only his occupation, it was his hobby.

He is survived by his two sons, Scott (Tami) Hammerly of Ankeny and Galen (Kathy) Hammerly of Newton; one daughter, Carol (Billy) Harriman of Story City; nine grandchildren, Jason (Julie) Hammerly, Brooke Hammerly, Brandi (Dean) Hammond, Jake (Melissa) Hammerly, Ike (Liz) Hammerly, Clarissa (Tim) Bloom, John Hammerly, Sarah (Grant) Carlson and Ben Harriman; four great-grandchildren, Nick Hammond, Alexis Hammerly, Josh Hammerly and Kaitlyn Bloom; three sisters, Joan (Wilmer) Tjossem of Indianola, Miriam Slings of Spring Lake, Mich., and Harriet J. (Robert) Smith of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret on April 30, 2007; and one sister, Carolyn Secor.
