He was a 1975 graduate of Hays High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University and was working on his master's degree. He retired from the Marines after 20 years of service.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Wesley Karlin, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Nicholas Bryce Karlin, Gilbert, Ariz.; his parents, Hays; three brothers, Tom Karlin and wife, Margaret, Colby, Larry Karlin and wife, Sheila, Garden City, and Paul Karlin and wife, Darla, Hays; three sisters, Jeaninne Kaberlein and husband, Bill, and Susan Taylor and husband, Rob, all of Hays, and Coleen Shields, Hill City; and a step-grandson, Preston.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Kenneth VonLintel.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion members. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday, both at the funeral home. A wake will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of the funeral home.
