The Rev. Edward L. “Shorty” Alsip, 79, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015, at home in Marion with his family by his side.

He was born on Monday, Nov. 15, 1935, in Creal Springs, the son of Edward Ellis and Mary Polly (Newton) Alsip.

Shorty grew up in Creal Springs, and graduated from the Crab Orchard High School class of 1953.

He was employed at the American Can Company of Chicago where he met the love of his life, Charlene, on a pair of roller skates. She was from Tennessee, the couple met in Illinois and were married in Mississippi.

He was united in marriage to Charlene “Tiner” Duke on Aug. 31, 1957, in Corinth, Mississippi, and together they shared over 46 years of marriage until her death, June 27, 2004. Shortly after they were married they moved back to Creal Springs and Shorty went to work for Jake’s Tire in Marion before he started to work for Fabick Machinery in Marion where he worked for 33 years and retired in 1998.

He was a member of the Ohio Association of General Baptist of Southern Illinois and the International Association of Machinists and Aero Space Workers.

He was baptized and became a lay minister in the Methodist Church in Creal Springs before joining Mount Moriah General Baptist Church where he was ordained in the late 1960s and preached there for eight years. The church grew in membership under his leadership allowing them to build a new sanctuary. He moved on to Spillertown Baptist Church, where he preached for over 23 years and retired, April 27, 2008, while there the membership grew and allowed the congregation to build the present sanctuary. He came out of retirement and preached at the Reynoldsburg Church for three years.

During his years of preaching, he lead numerous revivals, preformed countless marriages and presided over many funerals. Shorty touched lives of thousands of individuals in Williamson County and Southern Illinois.

The three loves of his life were the Lord, his wife and family and his Can-Am Motorcycle. He also enjoyed the fellowship of his friends at the Marion Senior Citizens Center.

He always said “God is good all the time, all the time God is good,” “Praise the Lord.”
