John LUMSDEN, 1738-1788, married Wilmouth STEELE (surname disputed among family researchers) 1752; no record of their marriage has been found.

John LUMSDEN, 1738-1788. bought land 1770 on Blackwater river in Bedford County, VA from Samuel GILBERT.

Enlisted February 11, 1778 from Henry County, Virginia. Served First Continental Line, Virginia Infantry; Fifth and Ninth Continental Line, Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel Bull, Parker, under Captain John Fauntleroy's Company.

Military Service as Private, enumerated on the Muster Roll of the 9th VA Regt. commanded by So. Col. Burgess BALL, May 1778; as Corporal enumerated on the Roll of the 9th VA. Regt. commanded by Lt. Col. Burges BALL in July 1778. (White Plains, August 4, 1778); enumerated as Corporal enumerated on the Pay Roll of the 1st Va. Regt. serving under Capt. Custes KINDALL Company;

John LUMSDEN, 1738-1778, reveived a Land Grant on 1 September 1783 for 409 acres of land in Franklin Co., VA and on 31 March 1786 received 440 acres on Maple Swamp of Blackwater River.

John LUMSDEN, 1738-1788, wrote his will on 2 October 1787. At that time, he was living on the same land that he bought in Bedford Co., VA from Samuel GILBERT, now located in the newly formed county of Franklin, formed from lands formerly located in Bedford County, Virginia.

In his will , John LUMSDEN, 1738-1788 named only four (4) of his known children:

son, ARW Rev. Jeremiah LUMSDEN, 1753-1837, buried Lumsden Family Cemetery, on Highway 142, between Kelly and Shady Dale, in Jasper County, Georgia, Find-A-Grave Memorial # 32949583; md. 1788, Franklin County, Virginia, Elizabeth BELCHER, 1757-1845. Jeremiah served as a Private, Virginia Continental Line, during the American Revolutionary War. He was admitted in the South Georgia Methodist Conference, was a circuit rider, served as a minister in several circuits and eventually settled to serve in Jasper County, Georgia. To their marriage, 13 children are known.

son, ARW Veteran Elijah LUMSDEN, 1762-1842, Mount Pleasant , Marshall County, Mississippi; md. 1st February 7, 1787, Frnaklin County, Virginia, Rachel Lowe GREER, age 14 years, the daughter of Benjamin GREER, and Rachel LOWE; md. 2nd May 2, 1808, Randolph County, Georgia, Nancy WHITE. Elijah LUMSDEN moved from Virginia with his brothers, Jeremiah and Jesse, lived in Greene, Hancock, and Putnam Counties in Georgia before settling in Randolph County (now Jasper County, Georgia) before his final move to Mount Pleasant, Marshall County, Mississippi, by 1840, where he died. The 1840 Census of Mississippi enumerates Elijah LUMSDEN residing in Marshall County. He died while residing there ion March 30, 1842. On April 6, 1842 his obituary was in THE GUARD (Holly Springs, MS) newspaper. "Departed this life on the 30th March 1842near North Mt. Pleasand, Marshall County, Mister Elijah Lumsden. Mr. Lumsden passed the storms of 80 winters; he was at the seige of Ninety-six under General Green." From his two (2) marriages, five (5) children are known.

son, Dudley LUMSDEN;

John died in [November 3] 1788 and Wilmouth died about 1790 in Franklin County, VA.
