Sarah Baird was the youngest of 8 children born to Samuel M. and Fannie (Harris) Baird. She was just 3 weeks old when her mother died and 10 years old when her father died on Aug. 1, 1856. Sarah and her brother Samuel both requested John G. Watt, husband of their older sister Jane, be appointed as their guardian. The appointment was made on Nov. 15, 1858.

In the 1860 census, Samuel Baird and Sarah Baird are in the household of John G. Watt, his wife Jane, and children Mary, Martha and Jacob in Troy, Illinois.

Sarah married John H. Morriss in Madison County, Illinois on Dec. 5, 1867. John Morriss served in the 9th Illinois Infantry but in a different company than Sarah's older brothers William and John.
