Alton R. Powell
Alton R. Powell, a lifelong resident of Arizona, has died at age 96.
Mr. Powell was born in Cherry, Ariz. on Oct. 5, 1905. His father and grandfather homesteaded Aguila in 1907.
The people of Aguila had to wait until Alton turned six years old before a school could be started in Aguila. There had to be six students, according to territorial requirements.
As a young man, he and his family ran cattle in Prescott, the Bradshaws, Arlington and Parker. He also owned several mines in the surrounding area.
Survivors include his son, Leon Powell of Wickenburg; grandson Leon Powell, Jr.; five great-grandchildren; and Bonnie Wilson and Wynona Muylert, who were long-term caregivers to Alton and his family.
He was preceded in death in 1962 by his wife of 36 years.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, March 20) at the Eagle Eye Cemetery in Aguila.
