Jerry Wayne Ashcraft, age 67, of Pine Bluff, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015
Born December 4, 1947 in Pine Bluff, he was a son of William Hogan Ashcraft and Katherine Hoyt Ashcraft.

Jerry was one of the most prolific scorers in Arkansas high school basketball history, and led his Grady Wolverines to the State Championship game. He was selected All-District and All-State, and played in the Arkansas High School All-Star game. His talents were rewarded with a scholarship to the University of Arkansas where his dream of being a Razorback was realized. He later attended UAM and UAPB. One of his favorite personal moments was winning the First Baptist Church men's cake bake competition, and his three-inch tall trophy still sits on his desk. He was an avid Razorback fan and loved to hunt and work the polls on election-day and early voting. He retired after over 30 years as an engineer with Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railways, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Jerry's memberships included being a past-member of the Jefferson Preparatory School Board, the board of C&L Electric Cooperative, Theta Xi Fraternity, and Grady Lions Club where he loved cooking fish at the annual fish fry. He was also a member of First Baptist Church and the Big Island Hunting Club. He was a recipient of the prestigious Carnegie Medal, awarded for Bravery and Heroism after saving the lives of four youths who were on a train trestle near Camden. His heroic deed made national news, and he was recognized by President Ronald Reagan and other leaders such as Governor Bill Clinton.

Preceded him in death are his parents, and a brother, James "Pete" Ashcraft.

Jerry is survived by wife of 46 years and high school sweetheart, Sondra Venable Ashcraft; a son, Christian Trey Ashcraft; a daughter Britten Ashcraft; brothers Winfred Ashcraft, W.H. Ashcraft both of Woodlawn; sisters, Jane Glover (Johnny) of White Hall and Erma Jean Millholland of Junction City, AR; sister-in-law Judy Ashcraft of Redfield; a host of nieces and nephews; also his best friend of ten years, a chunky little Maltese named Gizmo.
