Ernest was the son of William and Leota Codner Bulen born in Truro Township. He married Grace Clickinger on 3 July 1912 in Franklin County, and they had Katherine, Theodore, Geraldine, Ruth, Chester, Alice, Bessie, and Anna. Ernest had an eighth grade education and was a telegraph operator and a farmer. He was tall and slender with blue eyes and blondish hair. Ernest died from cirrhosis of the liver and cancer at the age of 73 years 2 months and 10 days.
