Scott Deputy Sheriff Rites Set Thursday
Services for Joseph H. Atkinson, 62, of 1337 W. High St., Davenport, a veteran of more than 25 years as deputy sheriff, will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Halligan-McCabe Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today.
Treasurer Candidate
Mr. Atkinson, who had announced as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Scott County treasurer last week, died in Mercy Hospital early Tuesday morning.
Mr. Atkinson was first appointed a deputy sheriff by former Sheriff Walter H. Beuse, a Democrat, in February of 1941. He was named Chief deputy by former Sheriff C.H. (Pete) Wildman when he defeated Beuse in 1950.
Sheriff William (Blackie) Strout, a Democrat, retained Mr. Atkinson as deputy when he took office in January of 1965.
Centerville Native
A native of Centerville, Mr. Atkinson had been a resident of Scott County since 1924. He attended schools in Centerville and was active in the Izaak Walton League for many years.
He was a member of the Holy Family Parish of Davenport and the Holy Family Dad’s Club.
In 1932 Mr. Atkinson married Mary Ellen Dana. She died in 1962.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John Thomas, Camp Polk, LA.; sisters, Mrs. Don Lynn, DeWitt; Mrs. Howard Elmer, Moline; Mrs. Paul Hahn, Des Moines; Mrs. George Gilman, Sawyer, Mich.; Miss Aurelia Atkinson, Fort Madison; and Mrs. Harry Welsher, Lakeland, Fla. And brother, Clyde Atkinson, Le Claire.
