“Nellie E., wife of George Rice and second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Miles, died at her home in Hornellsville on her 30th birthday, March 29th 1903, of appendicitis after a very painful illness of a week’s duration. She leaves besides her husband, two children, Elver, aged eleven, and Bertha, aged eight, her father and mother, three brothers and three sisters and a host of near and dear friends. Deceased was born at Vine Valley, March 29th 1873, was married to George Rice of Haskinville, January 21, 1891. Nellie’s was a lovely character, always seeking to make others happy, loving and unselfish. To know her was to love her. She was a devoted wife and mother, a kind loving daughter and sister and a faithful friend. She experienced religion several years ago and the influence of her life will long be felt by those who knew her best. Her funeral was held in Haskinville, April 1. Many kind friends gathered to pay their last respects. Beautiful flowers covered her casket. Rev. Guthrie preached an eloquent and impressive sermon from Rev. 14:13 after which all that was mortal of our Nellie was laid quietly by the side of her three little ones gone before to await the resurrection morn.”
