Born on February 1, 1923 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Borders & Laura Falls Borders. Sara was a lifetime member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where she served her Lord for many years in teaching capacities. Sara also shared her love with kindergarteners as a teacher’s aide for Township Three Elementary for 14 years before retiring in 1987. In addition to her parents, Sara is preceded in death by her husband, Buford L. Self Sr. They were married for 67 years prior to his passing. Sara is also preceded in death by her siblings, Eunice Rhyne, Robert Borders, W.H. Borders & Henderson Borders.
Sara is survived by her five children, Gail Dove & husband, John of Roanoke, VA; Buford Self Jr. & wife Jean, of Roanoke, VA; Carolyn Tate of Charlotte; Wanda Grady and husband, Ruffin of Greensboro and Kimberly Self Ritter and husband, Tom of Mt Pleasant, SC; six grandchildren, John Dove III (Jay) and wife, Jennifer; Laura Breeden and husband Chris; Buford Self III (Lee); Logan Self and wife, Rebecca; Jackson Tate and wife, Rebecca, and Elizabeth Grady; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Breeden, John Daniel Dove IV, Alexander Breeden and Ruth Benit Self. Survivors also include her siblings, Charlotte Plemmons, Ruth Hendrix, Jewel Brown and Elzie Borders, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

The Family will receive friends at Cecil Burton Funeral Home from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on June 28, 2015. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Rit Varriale and Rev. Jeff Brendle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
