Arthur J. Phillips, 83, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of Washington County, a son of the late Samuel Munsey and Dovina Mashburn Phillips and was also preceded in death by five brothers, five sisters and one granddaughter.
He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Johnson City, and served on the trustee board for 42 years and played the guitar for the choir.
He was a retired Lieutenant of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department after 23 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Arcadia Lodge #489 Limestone, TN. He was also a member of the Johnson City Rescue Squad for 10 years.
He was an avid reader of western books, and loved movies and internet checkers.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Eva Ruth, of the home; one sister, Martha Turner; one son, Steve Phillips of Johnson City; three daughters, Kathy Lewis and husband, Jim, Jonesborough, Shelby Cisco and husband, Jimmy, Blountville and Sheila Phillips and husband, James of South Carolina; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 4:00 pm until a Celebration of Life Service at 8:00 PM at First Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City. Reverend Tony Trott, Reverend Tommy Maines and Reverend Clarence Phillips will officiate. Committal services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 PM. Active pallbearers will be James Phillips, Jim Lewis, James Story, Josh Dugger, Josh Lewis, Jimmy Cisco and Jose Reyes. Honorary pallbearers will be the Washington County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard and John Kinnick, a fellow church member and who served with Mr. Phillips as a member of the Trustee Board since 1971. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Arcadia Masonic Lodge # 489, Limestone, TN.
