Columbiana – Varren “Rex” Allen, 81, died at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the Blossom Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Salem following a long illness.
Mr. Allen was born January 3, 1934 in Moundsville, WV, a son of the late Robert W. Allen and Margaret “Marie” Spiker and had lived in this area most of his life. He had been employed as a lithographer at the former Ballonoff Metal Products, Columbiana for 44 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Columbiana, the Twin State Auto Club of Youngstown and the Jackson Milton American Legion. He enjoyed stock car racing, bowling, playing cards, and traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Shirley Ann Mercer, whom he married July 12, 1951; a daughter, Elaine S. Dailey of Lisbon; two sons, David E. Allen of Salem and Daniel L. (Kathy) Allen of Boardman; three grandchildren, Julie Pauly, Lori Allen, and Morgan Dailey; and two great grandchildren, Katlyn and Tyler Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with Pastor Tina Gallaher officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery.
