Ray Sackett, 88, died Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Manor Care in West Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Monday, June 29, 2015 at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from4-7:00 pm Sunday at Iles Westover Chapel where a Rosary Service will begin at 7pm. Ray was born April 16, 1927 on a farm south of Menlo to Bert and Mildred (Peters) Sackett. He worked with his parents until he joined the US Navy during World War II at the age of 17. He served on a LST in the South Pacific. After returning home he met and married Marilyn James on October 20, 1951 in Stuart, Iowa. They moved to Des Moines and he worked for 40 years in the sheet metal industry. He began as an apprentice in the sheet metal union and retired as President of National Sheet Metal Company. Ray worked with the Boy Scouts for over 50 years in many different capacities. He was a lifelong member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. Upon retiring he took up golf and volunteered his time at Dowling Catholic High School and Camp Mitigwa as well as his church. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marilyn; daughters, Barbara and Deborah; sister Becky Culver of Peoria, IL; and many nieces and nephews. Ray is preceded in death by his son Timothy; his in-laws: John and Nellie (Tobin) James; his sister, Louise Raguet and his brother Wilbert (Judy) Sackett. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dowling Catholic High School or Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
