George H. Ames, 89, of South Natick
NATICK - George Henry Ames, 89, a resident of South Natick for almost 50 years, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Olympus Specialty Hospital at the MetroWest Medical Center in Natick, following a period of declining health.
He was the husband of Mary Ellen Crawford Ames for 49 years.

Born in Milton, he was the son of the late Stephen B. and Annie (Knight) Ames.

He attended the Milton Academy and was a graduate of the Rivers School and Brown University, Class of 1936, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a captain in the 10th Mountain Division. He served in the Aleutian Islands and later in Central Europe. Following his six years of active duty, he continued to serve in the reserves, retiring with the rank of major, after 20 years of service.

He was a licensed insurance broker, beginning with Kincade & Co. of Boston, then Chandler Hoover and Giles of Newton and later at Fair and Yeager Insurance of Natick.

Mr. Ames was an active participant in town activities, as a longtime town meeting member, serving on the Historical Commission and as a one-time president of the Historical Society.

He was active in the Natick Senior Center, singing with the Goldenaires, driving Meals on Wheels, and driving for others in need of transportation. He was a charter member and two-time president of the Natick Lions Club, and recipient of the Lions' most prestigious award, the Melvyn Douglas Award. He was a member and former moderator of the John Eliot Church and received the first Oak Leaf Award for long and meritorious service to the church.

He was a co-founder of the Natick Organic Community Farm and the first solar greenhouse in the area was built on this farm and bears his name.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, Larry and Robert Ames, both of New Hampshire, Mark Ames of Wyoming; four grandsons, a sister, Nancy Ames Cole of New Mexico, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. in the Eliot Church, Rte. 16, South Natick Square, officiated by the Rev. Michael Boardman, Pastor.

Visiting hours are Saturday, Oct. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 105 North Main St., Rte. 27, Natick.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Natick Community Farm, the Natick Lions Club or Eliot Church.
