A memorial service will be held in Sacramento for Doris Hildebrand Works.
Born in Oklahoma, Doris died Friday, March 11, 2011 in Merced.
Doris moved to California with her parents and six siblings in the 1930s, settling in Inyo County. Doris graduated from Big Pine High School and married Byron Works in 1948. Following Byron's graduation from the University of Nevada, Reno, they returned to Inyo County, settling in Bishop. Doris was a devoted mother and homemaker for her family and also worked as a telephone operator and customer service representative at the telephone company in Bishop. Byron and Doris moved to the Sacramento area in 1967, in part to provide greater opportunity for their son who had Downs Syndrome. Doris became very involved in Opportunities for the Handicapped Inc. in Sacramento, including serving on their board of directors. She volunteered countless hours working on activities to raise funds for this organization and assisting those with special needs to take part in activities such as bowling leagues and Special Olympics. Doris was a wonderful example of love and devotion to her family and friends and will be greatly missed. Doris was preceded in death by her husband and son. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Charles Fall; granddaughter, Stephanie Fall; and great-granddaughter, Valerie Bell.
