Man Dies In Fire At Home Near New Paris

C.A. Wissinger, 45, Victim of Blaze That Levels Residence

A 45-year-old New Paris area man was burned to death early this morning when fire leveled his home, three miles west of this Bedford County community. The victim was identified as Clarence Albert Wissinger, New Paris R.D. Bedford County Coroner Vernon G. Geisel said Wissinger died probably from suffocation. The badly charred remains were found about 1:30 a.m., less that an hour after the blaze was discovered. The body was removed by members of Alum Bank Volunteer Fire Company who had been called at 1 a.m. Firemen were helpless since the old log structure already had fallen in when they arrived at the scene.

Thomas C. Wissinger, 79, father of the dead man, told Coroner Geisel that he and his son lived alone in the house, known locally as the old Rose property. The father told the coroner he was asleep on the second floor and escaped after he was awakened by smoke between midnight and 1 a.m. He said he knew his son had been in the house but was unable to rescue him. He stated he was not sure weather his son had gone to bed upstairs.

According to signs at the debris, the victim apparently had been lying on a cot on the first floor of the house. He apparently tried to escape since his body was found face down near the remains of the bed. The exact cause of the blaze has not been determined. However, officials said it may have started from a cigarette or a kerosene lantern used by the two men. The house was not wired for electricity. No inquest is planned.
