LONG BEACH - John Humphrey Powell, 59, Long Beach, died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) in Chicago in a plane crash.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, Valparaiso, with the Rev. David Kovalow-St. John and the Rev. Joyce Knauff officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powell was born June 19, 1940, in Valparaiso, to Clarence M. and Carolyn A. Glissman Powell.

Surviving are his wife, Jane (Lindemann) Powell, Long Beach; his former wife, Mary Ann (Campolattara) Powell, Michigan City; two sons, Michael Powell, Valparaiso, and Staff Sgt. Jay (Tracy) Powell of Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska; his mother, Carolyn Powell, Valparaiso; four sisters, Carol (Dr. Frank) Sturdevant, Barbara (Tom) Wheele, and Mary (Al) LeBio, all of Valparaiso, and Alicia Powell, Michigan City; two brothers, Steve (Nancy) Powell and Mark Powell, Valparaiso; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Jeffrey Powell.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his father in 1994 and a nephew, Scott Powell, in 1990.

Mr. Powell was an aircraft pilot all of his working life, the last 11 years for Trans-Apparel (formerly Jaymar-Ruby). He was a member of First Christian Church, Valparaiso, and Northwest Athletic Club. He was an Army veteran who served in Korea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michiana Humane Society or to the First Christian Church Building Fund.
