CALLED BY MOTHER’S DEATH
L. M. Hermann was called to Red Oak, last Sunday by the news of the unexpected death of his mother who passed away the day previous.
The following is from the Red Oak Express relative to the death and burial of Mrs. Hersman.
Mrs. Helen Hermann, 71, widow of John J. Hermann, died at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Goldie Kempton of Des Moines, Saturday morning. Her death was sudden. She was in her usual health Friday and and retired that evening feeling well. Shortly before 1 o’clock Saturday she was awakened with a choking attack which caused her death within fifteen minutes after she was stricken. The body was sent here for funeral service and burial.
Mrs. Hersman was born at Keokuk, Iowa, February 17, 1857, and was married to John J. Hermann in the town of her birth January 9, 1878. They moved to Red Oak in 1890. Mr. Hersman died here about 19 years ago. Mrs. Hersman lived here until about seven years ago when she went to Des Moines to make her home with her daughter.
Mrs. Hersman was the mother of eight children, two of whom, Ernest and John H. Jr., preceded their mother in death. The surviving children are L. M. Hermann of Wagoner, Oklahoma; Arthur Hermann of Red Oak; Mrs. Goldie Kempton of Des Moines; Mrs. Helen Newkirk of Pekin, Illinois; Mrs. Mary Weimer and Judson Hermann of Albia, Iowa. Twelve grandchildren also survive her.
Mrs. Hersman had been a member of the Christian Church for over fifty years.
Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o’clock from the home of her son, Arthur Hermann, 103 Washington Avenue. Rev. Ira E. Carney of the Christian church officiating. All of her children were in attendance at the funeral. The pall bearers, C. W. Cozad, M. L. Stewart, J. Wright, J. N. Fate, Carl E. Rappelled, and W. R. Sever. Burial was in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery.
