Born June 1, 1911, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Claude L. and Elmina Cook Whitener.
He was retired from Custom Craft.
Survivors include his wife, Celia Barger Whitener of the home; a son, John C. Whitener; three daughters, Mrs. Claude (Nellie) Wilson, Elsie Whitener Mooneyham, and Mrs. Richard (Sadie) Ellenburg of Hickory; four sisters, Mrs. John (Pearl) Frye, Ina Whitener Westfall, Louise Whitener Abernathy, and Mrs. W.M. (Ethel) Williams of Hickory; two brothers, Glenn H. Whitener of Hickory and Grover Whitener of North Fork, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Mount Hebron Lutheran Church.
