Alton Matthew Oakes, Jr. of Hensley, Arkansas was born July 22, 1933 in Greensboro, North Carolina, the son of the late Alton Matthew Oakes, Sr. and Nancy Heath Oakes. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sheridan had served in the United State Army, and was a retired truck driver for Great Lakes Chemical in El Dorado, Arkansas. He was a "history buff" who loved traveling with his job, and telling stories.

He was a Godly man who cherished his family dearly and raised them all in church and in a nice home with stability and security. Mr. Oakes died Monday, June 22, 2015 in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the age of 81.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ronald Oakes and Charles Oakes and a grandson, Aaron Oakes. Survivors: wife and best friend of 62 years, Ann Jones Oakes of Hensley; sons, Terry Oakes and wife Judy, Tommy Oakes and Shelly Oakes all of Hensley; daughter, Renee O. Lawson and husband Arnie of Texarkana, Texas; grandchildren, Whitley Oakes, Scott Oakes, Betty Jones, Jennifer Oakes, Elizabeth Lawson, Alexandra Lawson, 5 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Bro. Ernest DeSoto officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Oakes, Ken Jones, Seth Jones, Andy Rudd and Whit Oakes.
