Immediately before the war he lived in South Texas, then returned to Virginia to enlist.

Company H "Black Horse Cavalry", 4th Virginia Cavalry, Mumford's Brigade, Fitzhugh Lee's Division, Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Fauquier County, VA.; 5'9", dark complexion, grey eyes, auburn hair.
Enlisted for 12 months' service on 6/14/1861 in Warrenton, VA., he was mustered into Captain Robert Randolph's Company, 4th Virginia Cavalry as a Private. (This company subsequently was designated Company H.)
Listed on Sept & Oct 1861 Roll as Absent, on detached duty as Courier for General Ewell.
Present on all rolls until July & Aug and Sept & Oct 1863 Rolls, when listed as Absent, sick in hospital at Hanover Academy, Hanover County.
Present on all remaining rolls.
Paroled 5/6/1865 at Winchester, VA.

Postwar he lived in Missouri, then Oregon, before again moving to Texas.
Married Mary Louise Cooper in Brazos County, Texas on 3/1/1877. Father of Elmer George, B. Cooper George, and Mrs. Bert White. Teacher; Mason; member of Methodist Episcopal Church, and Sul Ross U.C.V. in which he was an officer.
Died of stomach cancer.

The 4th Cavalry Regiment, "Escorts to Gen. Stonewall Jackson", completed its organization at Sangster's Cross Roads, Prince William County, Virginia, in September, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Prince William, Chesterfield, Madison, Culpeper, Powhatan, Goochland, Hanover, Fauquier, Buckingham, and the City of Richmond.
It participated in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Seven Days' Battles, 2nd Manassas, Maryland campaigns, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Upperville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Bethesda Church, the Shenandoah Valley with Early and around Appomattox.
