Mary Sawyers Krueger, a longtime resident of Kirby, passed away Saturday June 20, 2015 at VITAS Hospice Care. Born in 1924 in Ben Hur, TX, to Walter (Tom) and Priscilla Sawyers. Mary or Frances, to family, grew up around Mexia and Mart. She told many stories of hard times living on a farm where, as young girl she picked cotton. Mary graduated from LaVega High School. In 1942 she was working as a waitress in Waco when she caught the eye of a very handsome young airman. Alfred or Al, sometimes lacked in the right words to say, but his cocky little smile wooed her over. They were married for 61 years. Mary worked in the lunch room at Kirby Junior High, and as a florist. She enjoyed painting, fixing watches and making jewelry. Mary was born into a very religious family and it is no wonder that she was part of the birth and building of Kirby Baptist Church. She enjoyed her worship time at church, especially any time she could sing in the choir. Mary was strong willed in her convictions and took on the task of keeping the preachers at Kirby Baptist Church in line, and was always ready to give them advice. In the words of her nephew "pretty sure Uncle Al has already told St. Peter to just say yes ma'am." She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Krueger; baby daughter, Mary Priscilla; grandchildren, Terry Carbaugh, Kellen Copeland and her 7 brothers and sisters. Mary is survived by her three daughters, Cheryl Carbaugh and husband Dan of San Antonio, Peggy White and husband, Tom of Converse and Rita Copeland and husband, Ken of Austin. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Pamela Rathke and husband, Vince of Pipe Creek, Alisha Underwood of Converse, Drew Copeland and wife, Amber, Cole Copeland and wife, Mindy all of Austin, Brian White and wife, Delaine of San Antonio and Karen White of College Station. Also 8 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with viewing one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Converse, TX. Serving as pallbearers will be, Garrett Underwood, Michael Makris, Tom Parker, Gerry Giles, Jr., Drew Copeland, Cole Copeland, and James Brubaker.
