Services were Monday, July 24, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah for Virgil Ellsworth Noel, 50. Noel died July 20, 1994 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha after a brief illness.
Noel had worked at Plaindealer Publishing in Tekamah, NE since October of 1962 and was supervisor of press operations at the time of his death.
He was born August, 20, 1944 in Blair to Paul and Lillie (Pettit) Noel. He attended country schools in Burt County and graduated from Decatur High School in 1962. On October 21, 1962, Noel and Cheryl Doncheski married at Tekamah. The family joined Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1976. Noel was an active member, serving on the church council and as a Sunday school teacher. He also was a board member of the Tekamah-Herman-Decatur Church Community Council.
The Noels were members of Mid-West Trail Riders. Virgil enjoyed horses and riding, camping, pitching horseshoes and playing and watching baseball. The Rev. Brian Maas, who officiated Monday's service, compared Noel to the stained glass in the church windows, which come to life only when the light shines through. "Virgil was never in the public eye, but was there when someone was in need and in doing so, let the glory of God shine through," said Rev. Maas.
"If something needed to be done or somebody needed a hand, he found a way to get it done", said family members. He believed in enjoying life and wanted others to enjoy it too."
Noel is survived by his wife, Cheryl and son, Chad, both of Tekamah; daughters and sons-in-law, Jody and Gary Davis, Decatur, and Janelle and Mark Weeces, Tekamah; sisters, Vera Lindberg and Myrtle Haeffner, both of Lyons; Delores Lindberg, Craig; and Donna Johnson, Oakland; three grandchildren, Ethan Davis, and Ryan and Preston Weeces; godchild, Anica McGown; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don; sister, Myrna; nephew, Lonnie Morgan; and niece, Nancy Noel Baxter.
Linda Rogers was organist for Monday's service. Jeff Robinson was soloist on "God Must Have Been a Cowboy at Heart" and John Peck sang "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove". Noel's son-in-law, Gary Davis, read "The Cowboy Prayer".
Casket bearers were Ernie Glup, Chuck Rogers, Roger Beck, Bill Carson, Sam Harmer and John Haverkamp. Honorary casket bearers were Joe Zink, Jack Bailey, Jary Morgan, Terry Marr, Paulina Morton, Mark Jackson and Mike McAllister.
Burial was at Tekamah Cemetery.
