Dick was born on February 7, 1927, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Ward John and Marybelle (Smith) Hakes. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran during the Korean Conflict. On July 17, 1950, Dick was united in marriage to M. Jane Hanlon at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, and they made their home in Dallas Center. For more than 30 years, Dick owned and operated Hakes Insurance Agency, until his retirement in 1990. Dick was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Dallas Center American Legion Post 49, Lions Club, and the Men's Breakfast Club at The Village at Legacy Pointe. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Teresa J. (Ed) Shafer of Grimes, Geraldine M. (James) Thacker of Des Moines and Michael R. Hakes of Dallas Center; one brother, Jack S. (Joann) Hakes of Llano, CA, two sisters, Geraldine (John) Kleymann of Prole, IA and Mary Jean Tiernan of Salina, KS; five grandchildren, Janey (Dan) Jondle, Jackie (David) Thompson, Matt (Jessi) Shafer, Vanessa Richardson and Ian Richardson; and seven great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded into eternal life by his parents; beloved wife, Jane Hakes in 2007; one sister, Peggy Tisdale; and one granddaughter at infancy, Wendy Richardson.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at Iles Funeral Homes, Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Boniface Catholic Church or Dallas Center American Legion Post 49.
