William G. Schnebel, 78, of Alva, Okla., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Alva.

He was born May 7, 1924, in Fremont. He attended school in Fremont where he graduated in 1942. In the fall of 1942, he enrolled at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont which he attended until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving as a pilot of a P-38 in the 51st Fighter Squadron in Panama. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in May 1946. He married Elaine Osterloh on July 2, 1944, in Hooper. He graduated from Midland with a bachelor of arts degree and went on to Kansas University where he received his master of arts in 1950. He received his administrator's degree from Oklahoma State University, and also attended Wichita State University. Upon graduating from Kansas University, he entered a coaching career in Topeka, Kan., coaching there until 1955 when he became the football coach at the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kan. During the course of his coaching career, he twice received the Knute Rockne Little All America Coach of the Year, in 1959 and 1963. He went to Northwestern State College in 1965 where he coached football, and in 1971 became an administrator at the Alva Public Schools, becoming the superintendent in 1975. He retired in 1984.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served several times as an elder. During the course of his life, he was an active member of the Lions Club, Rotary, Oklahoma Education Association and National Education Association, having served in leadership positions in these organizations. He had been a member of Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.

Survivors include: his wife; three sons, Joe Schnebel of Whitefish, Mont., Mark (and wife, Jana) Schnebel of Enid, Okla., and Brock (and wife, Kelli) Schnebel of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Alva First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ethan Sayler officiating. The body was cremated.

Memorials have been established to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and for Alzheimer's research.
