Mr. Phy was born in Cookeville, TN, Putnam County, on Jan. 15, 1916 and moved to McEwen, TN in 1918. He passed away June 27, 2006 in McEwen, TN, Humphreys County. He was school superintendent for eight years for the Humphreys County Board of Education, a U.S. Army World War II Veteran and member of McEwen Church of Christ. He was also principal of McEwen School for 15 years, worked for Tennessee State Department of Education for one year. He was listed in Who's Who Personalities of Tennessee and Who's Who in Southeast, Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, NEA, TEA, Humphreys County and Middle Tennessee Retired Teachers, American Legion Post 34, elder of McEwen church of Christ, Humphreys County Nursing Home Board of Directors, Humphreys County Industrial Board, Highland Rim Economic Council Board of Directors and supervisor of Adult Bible School for McEwen church of Christ.
Mr. Phy was the son of the late James Marion and Jewell Gertrude Dowell Phy. He was married to Mae Welch Phy of McEwen.
Mr. Phy,age 90, died June 27, 2006. Funeral services were held Friday, June 30, 2006 at McEwen church of Christ. Bro. Jim Suddeath of McEwen officiated the service, with burial at McEwen Cemetery. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons and daughters-in-law, James Byram "Jim" and Tammy "Bo" Phy of McEwen, and Barry Welch Phy and Dottie Phy of Tennessee City; a daughter and son-in-law, Janna Louise and Joe Smith of McEwen; a brother, Howard Phy of Wichita Falls, Texas; two sisters, Geneva French of Waverly and Louise Rogers of Nashville; and 6 grandchildren.
