Chauncey Ephraim Bass was the son of Ephraim and Mary Ann (Hyde) Bass. His father Ephraim Bass lost his life on Feb. 15, 1865 near Petersburg, VA during the Civil War. His mother married Russell Allen 21 months later.

Chauncey married Minnie Myers on Feb. 26, 1882 in Sandy Creek, NY. They celebrated 67 years of marriage.

Chauncey grew up in upper New York State; he took a job as a boatman on the Erie Canal. Chauncey was an adventurous man who lived in the States of New York, Michigan, Missouri & Kansas and he traveled through many other states. Gold prospecting took him to California. He worked several different jobs before starting his own logging business at age 65 in Kansas.
