Mary Shannon was born in Ireland around 1720. She was the daughter of Samuel Shannon, who was an heroic figure in the celebrated Siege of Londonderry in 1688-89. It is reported that Samuel was nearly beaten to death. He was found in this condition, and cared for until restored to health by a Catholic girl.

Mary married James McCampbell in Ireland around 1741. Together they had at least eight children.
