Ellen Maria Bloomfield was born 7 October 1858 in Chanceville, Monmouth, New Jersey. Her parents are John Bloomfield (Jr.) and Harriet Wilkinson Bloomfield. In 1859 Ellen's parents traveled by rail and by steamship from Chanceville, New Jersey to Florence, Douglas, Nebraska Territory to join a wagon train which would eventually take them to the Salt Lake Valley in the Utah Territory. Ellen died on 14 October 1859 before her parents left for Utah. Due to the lateness of the year, her parents did not leave for Utah until 9 June 1860. Ellen is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave in the present day Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska area. This information was obtained from family records which were kept by her father, John Bloomfield (Jr.).
