Brother Norbert A. Sturm, age 91, Of Dayton, Ohio, Died September 11, 2009 at Mercy-Siena Woods. Born October 1, 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Hubert and Elizabeth Sturm, was also preceded in death by his brothers Gerald, Hubert, Francis, and E. Joseph Sturm, as well as his sister, Mary Dolores Hardest Gore. He is survived by numerous and loving nieces and nephews.

He entered the Society of Mary and professed first vows August 15, 1937 at Mt. St. John in Dayton, Ohio and perpetual vows on July 6, 1941 at St. Louis College in Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated from the University of Dayton in 1940 and Ohio State University with a Masters in Education in 1951, as well as a Ph.D. in English from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio in 1961. Brother Norbert's first year of teaching was in 1940 at Chaminade High School in Dayton, Ohio. He spent the "war years" in Hawaii teaching at both St. Mary's in Hilo as well as St. Louis College in Honolulu. In 1946 he returned to Chaminade High School until 1954 when he began teaching at Cathedral Latin High School in Cleveland, Ohio. From 1960 to 1972 he taught English as a Professor at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. In 1972 at the age of 55 he began 28 years of missionary service in Africa, first as a teacher in Chaminade Secondary School in Karonga, Malawi and then at the Brother Vincent House in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2000 he returned to the United States, first at the Provincialate of the former New York Province in Baltimore, Maryland and then at Alumni Hall in Dayton, Ohio before illness took him to the Mercy-Siena retirement community.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc., 4107 Wilkens Avenue Baltimore, Md. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Baltimore, Md.
