New Orleans Times-Picayune, 5 Nov 1886:
Fatally Scalded
Last Wednesday a steam pipe exploded in the sugar house of the Uncle Sam Plantation, in St. James Parish and fatally scalded a colored man named Auguste Dugas. The injured man had been employed in the engine room of the sugar house, and in compliance with orders drew the fires from under the boilers. He then opened the valve to blow off steam through the mad drum to clean it out when the discharge pipe burst and he was frightfully scalded. The boilers ran dry in a short time, and had the fires been still under them a terrific explosion would doubtless have occurred. On Thursday last Dugas died in great agony from the effects of his injuries. No other damage resulted from the accident.
