The Clatsop County Historical Society notes the passing of a noted member of the Flavel family. Patricia Jean Flavel passed away in her sleep Sunday, March 9th, 2015. Miss Flavel was the oldest great grand-daughter of Captain George and Mary Flavel of Astoria, Oregon.
Miss Flavel inherited her great grand-parent's home from her Great Aunt Nellie Flavel in 1933. Shortly after, she donated the grand home and property to Clatsop County for the use and enjoyment of the public. Today the home serves as the Flavel House Museum, owned and operated by the Clatsop County Historical Society.
Mac Burns, Executive Director of the Clatsop County Historical Society, said"What an amazing act of generosity Patricia made donating her great-grandfather's house for the public good. Just imagine the impact on Astoria if she had sold it instead!"
After the divorce of her parents in 1916, Patricia and her older brother George Edward were raised by their Great Aunt Nellie. They lived in Astoria during the summers and holidays, but attended school in San Francisco during the remainder of the year. During their stays in San Francisco they would visit with their mother and younger sister Virginia. After the death of her Aunt Nellie, Patricia lived in the San Francisco area to be near her mother and sister.
Patricia was a student at Vasser College in Poughkeepsie, New York at the time of her Great Aunt's death. After settling her affairs and transferring title of the house to the County she continued her studies at Stanford University in California where she received her Bachelor's degree.
During part of her professional life she worked as a receptionist for a doctor's office, a supervisor for AT&T, and finally as a librarian at the University of California, Berkley. As an avid reader (sometimes two books a week) this was her favorite position. Patricia was also a golf enthusiast, playing well into her eighties.
Miss Flavel is survived by her half-sister Mary Louise Flavel her nieces Patricia (Patsy) Malenfant, Penelope (Penny) Marshall, Virginia Collins; a nephew, William Malenfant Jr., eleven grand nieces and nephews and many great-grand nieces and nephews.
