John was the only child of John Ray and Mary Kay Bates...He was a big Teddy Bear to all of his "girlfriends"..He graduated from South Lakes High School in Reston, Va..He and his girlfriend at the time were up in West Virginia and they were coming home on a dirt/gravel road and they swerved and spun out of control, went down an embankment, hit a tree,flipped several times, and landed on a rock..He did live for a few moments..from what his girlfriend had said...He was a person with a big heart for everyone...He is loved and missed by all...He is my son's Dylan Michael Knerler Ward's GODFATHER..Even though John passed away before Dylan was even born..we had talked years before, that if either one of us got married the other would be our children's godparent..But now they are in Heaven together and John along with 5 sets of great-grandparents are watching Dylan for me.
