Dorothy was born on Dec. 16, 1920, in Harrison County, Missouri, and was the only child of Fred and Lila Smith Allen. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1939.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, and daughter Carol.
A beloved home economics teacher, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy was also a talented baker and cake decorator, skilled pianist and organist and dedicated genealogy researcher. She will be remembered for her always-cheerful outlook on life, never having an unkind word for anyone.
She received her bachelor's degree in Vocational Home Economics from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo., close to when World War II was gearing up -- a time when not many women completed college.
On June 9, 1946, she married Stanley E. Gibbs, and together they had four children: Carol, Richard, Anita and James. The family lived in many towns in Missouri and Kansas, eventually settling in Vassar, where Dorothy was an active member of the Vassar United Methodist Church.
Dorothy taught Home Economics many years in Appleton City and Hamilton, Mo., and her students from J.C. Penney High School in Hamilton continued to correspond with her up until her death.
She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her surviving family of: son Richard Gibbs of Topeka; daughter Anita (Pete) Elsham of Leawood; son James (Donna) Gibbs of Auburn; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 16, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Hatton, Mo.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care of Kansas City, MO or Villa St. Francis in Olathe.
