William Lauder, 87, of Sewickley, passed away Friday, June 5, 2015, while under the compassionate care of Forbes Hospice, West Penn Hospital.

He was born April 20, 1928 in Huntingdon, PA, son of William A. and Grace (Wills) Lauder.

His ancestry traces through the Lauder, Ashcom, Smith and Piper families, back to Major General John Piper, who, from 1765 and until 1800 served in the Bedford County Militia during the American Revolution. Piper went on to serve at the Provincial Convention at Carpenter's Hall, Philadelphia in 1776 and later in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Additionally interesting was his grandfather, William Lauder, the son of Scottish immigrants coming to New Jersey in the early 1850's. William, the grandfather, was the superintendent and general manager of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company. His grandfather has been historically recognized as the "Father of the Pennsylvania School Code". A story of intrigue that William proudly enjoyed re-telling was the escapade in which his grandfather, also serving as paymaster for the company, boarded a train to deliver the payroll. Two bandits approached him brandishing guns. His grandfather foiled the attempted robbery by shooting one of the bandits right between the eyes. The other bandit jumped from the train.

William proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps and received a World War II Victory Medal. Following his honorable discharge he attended Penn State University and graduated in the Class of 1953. William was a Past President of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a metallurgist, retiring as the Director of Research with Shenango, LLC after 38 years of service. William was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Penn State Alumni Association.

In his leisure, William liked being outdoors meticulously manicuring his lawn and shrubs. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed the many friendships he developed through the years. Most important to William was the love for his family. He cherished the time he spent with his grandson Christian, and was always there for school and sporting events.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie; a son, William "Bill" Lauder in 2011, and granddaughter, Krista K. Lauder in 2003.

William is survived by a son, Robert Ashcom Lauder, Sewickley; his daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and John Bigley, Gibsonia; his grandson, Christian Bigley, Gibsonia, and dear friend, Jean Hills, who was affectionately called "Grandma Jean".

Friends will be received on Saturday, June 13, 2015, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester, PA. 724-728-2456. A Memorial Service and Military Honors will follow the visitation at 3 p.m.
