Son of James Caldwell and Hannah Ogden
After his father's death, John Edwards Caldwell was by his guardian, Elias Boudinot, placed under the care of Rev Dr. McWhorter of Newark, NJ. The Marquis de Lafayette, out of great regard for the father, solicited and obtained permission to adopt and educate him, and upon his return to France in 1782 took his young charge with him as one of the family. He returned to America in 1791, and settled in Philadelphia where his guardian Mr. Boudinot was living. Here in 1801 he married Louise, who died with a year, leaving an infant daughter. On June 25, 1801, he was appointed consular agent of the US for the city of San Domingo, and other parts of the West Indies. He afterward removed to New York City, and in 1809 renounced Popery, which he had embraced in France, and became a member of the Cedar Street Presbyterian Church of New York, being made an Elder in 1811. His name was connected with almost every good object of the day. He was one of the most active and influential founders of the American Bible Society, and until his death its General agent. In 1816 he gave to this society $10,000. In March 1816 he founded the Christian Herald, the first five volumes of which he edited and published at NY. He died greatly lamented at his home in NYC, 3/9/1819.

Just prior to his marriage he had been installed pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church of Fishkill. Here there married life was spent. After the death of Louise, he married Anna M. Freeman, b. 2/1798; d. 5/11/1881 possibly Newburgh, NY. They had 6 children
2. 9/25/1805, Essex Co, NJ, Mrs. Hannah (Ker) Van Wyck; d. Fishkill, NY 1/24/1858, age 90, dau of Rev Nathan Ker, for many years pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Goshen, NY, where he died in 1804. She bore him no children but tenderly reared her step-daughter, Louise. She married 1st, Theodorus Van Wyck, son of Theodorus Van Wyck (139639107) and Altje (Adeline) Brinkerhoff (132925193 and 139635833). His great and great-great grandfathers were also named Theodorus .

Per Michael Towers on 6/20/2012: Most burials from the churchyard and vaults underneath were removed around 1844 when the church was purchased by the US Gov't and converted into a Post Office. Some of the graves were missed and human remains were later discovered at the site. So far, no information indicating where the remains were moved to.
